The truth about your toothpaste
As a mother I'm always yelling to my toddlers, "Boy, what is that in your mouth?" or "Don't you put that in your mouth!!" and so on and so on. I was afraid that they may choke on something or swallow something
harmful that was not meant for consumption and I would have to rush them to the hospital. Ironically enough I now I have to ask myself them same questions when it comes buying toothpaste. Yes, I said it, TOOTHPASTE.
Why in the world would I have to worry about harmful chemicals in my toothpaste or worry if I accidentally swallow more than a pea size that I would have to call poison control? These are warnings that manufacturers actually put on the back of their toothpastes. Is it because they contain harmful chemicals and toxins? But wait....what about my pearly whites and minty fresh breath that I been trying to get by brushing 3x a day...can I still get it? The answer is YES YOU CAN, but first take a look at the deadly poisons you may be using everyday in your mouth that you give to your family to use as well..
Here are some common toothpaste ingredients you will find in regular commercial brands of toothpaste:
Glycerin
- May leave a layer of film on the teeth that prevents re-mineralization.
- It can also be dangerous to our health if processed with dangerous chemicals.
- A known carcinogen. Some natural companies still stand behind its use and claim it is safe. Added as a detergent and cleansing agent it can damage eyes, irritate skin and lead to labored breathing.
- According to the American College of Toxicology, sodium laurel sulfate may stay within the body for up to five days, accumulating in the heart, liver, lungs and brain.
- It is also used to create the foaming action you may expect when brushing your teeth.
- Most artificial sweeteners are proven carcinogens some are excitotoxins, meaning they cause rapid firing and death of brain cells.
- Ingesting even a small amount of sodium fluoride may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
- Fluoride is highly toxic in the form found in toothpaste and never found in nature in this state.
- Found most often in anti-bacterial products, triclosan supplements many toothpaste brands.
- United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies triclosan as a pesticide, stating it poses a risk to both human health and the environment.
- Scientists categorize triclosan as a chlorophenol, which is a type of chemical suspected of causing cancer in humans.
- Active component in antifreeze, propylene glycol acts as a wetting agent and surfactant in toothpaste.
- Material Safety Data Sheets for propylene glycol warn that the chemical can be rapidly absorbed through the skin, with prolonged contact leading to brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.
- Made from chemicals derived from oil, gas or gasoline
- FD & C Blue No. 1 – an artificial dye that may cause allergic reactions and possibly tumors
It is also proven that the fluoride found in toothpaste mixed with the chloride found in your water also creates a chemical reaction. With these formulas and different chemicals your mouth is a big science project full of bombs and toxins that will slowly kill you.
